The idea of transformation in terms of changing uses or functions is nothing new, neither is the idea of programmatic hybridation. The dynamic environment we live in challenges us to think relationships that go beyond the fixed as in becoming dynamic and mutable. Through this optic, program and typology refer less to fixed functions, but rather relate to strategies responding to variable conditions, enabling multiple, fluctuating relationships.

In this context, [P3] is to be understood as a mapping of potential strategies of transformation in relation to the existing structure (one selected section – court yard – of the visited building). The mapping of formal strategies should be performed in dialogue with the introduction of new uses, and reflect upon their potential spatial - and hence social -interaction. This should include thoughts on their relation to the surrounding landscape; on potential particular relations with existing uses; on potential facilities to be shared and the investigation of use-specific requirements.
Performing the studies in groups of 2 students, 2 chosen actions of transformation analysed in the [P1] – Parasiting, Infiltrating, Masking, Intertwining – are to be explored in relation to the existing structure and new potential programs. In regard to the latter and in response to the provided brief, each of the two is to choose an art form to which she or he will relate their investigations (meaning that each team will deal with two different art forms).
Announcing intentions regarding their planned act of inhabitation of the existing structure, each team is asked to create two scenarios (corresponding to the chosen actions of transformation) and to produce spatially programmatic models focusing on:
>Relations between the existing structure and the strategy of potential inhabitation
In this context, the existing structure is to be seen not only as a structural system, but also as a material system that presents a spatial logic and an existing internal organisation of particular relationships.
>Relations between the fixed and the flexible
>Relations between the generic, potentially serial and the specific
>Relations between inside and outside
The character of the models as well as the used materials depend on the nature of the performed studies, however the models should not exceed the following dimensions: 29,7x29,7x29,7 cm.

Each model is to be supplemented by a 3d axonometric drawing (A1 format in vertical) exploring spatial relationships between body/structure/space, interior as well as exterior.
The 3d drawing is to be understood as a visual narrative of developed scenario(-s), involving the production of new material, as well as utilizing material collected during the study trip [P2], and the model production process. The drawing is to be supplemented by a text explaining relations (max. 10 words), as well as announcement of sources (texts; photos).
Both model and the drawing are to be given a short and precise preliminary title announcing their embedded programmatic intentions.

The production of models is introduced by a course in utilizing digital workshop equipment (the water jet, laser cutter et. al.).

>>>Phase 2 [P2]: Reflective site readings

Gerard Richter Parkscapes (1971)[3]
<http://www.gerhard-richter.com/art/atlas>[accessed: 20 January 2014]

Following the collective documentation and analysis of selected examples of transformation and prior to the spatial interventions, the second phase [P2] turns to the individual analysis of the site. With a focus on extracting spatial and environmental potentials, as well as utilizing the historical facts and archival material as a potential foundation for further explorations and specific design decisions, the investigations will be performed on–site where two-days workshop will be organised in collaboration with the ProraZentrum. During that visit the following relations have to be analysed/mapped/registered:
> outside/inside
> space/structure
> space/body
> space/environment
> serial/unique

Furthermore, during the study trip to Berlin existing renowned examples of architectural transformation will be visited, providing insights into restoration/transformation strategies and practices, complementing previously developed taxonomy.
6 buildings chosen from the list included in the Study Trip Guide will be analysed with particular attention to the relationships:
> existing/new
> space/body/environment
> exhibited work(s) of art/space/body

Each student is asked to process the produced/collected material (drawings, photos) during the study trip, communicating the results of the performed investigations in Seawhite Sketchbook (A5 format) using collage technique.
Two parts will compose the notebook:
[P2.1]  Berlin – two pages per visited building:
Page 1. Title defining discovered relations/ maximum 10 words
Page 2. Collage
[P2.2]  Prora – two pages per analysed relation:
Page 1. Title defining mapped relations/ maximum 10 words
Page 2. Collage

>>>Phase 1 [P1]: Relational taxonomy

[2]
Langarita Navarro arquitectos: Transformation of RBMA headquarters at Matadero Madrid Nave 15, Madrid, Spain (2011)
<http://www.langarita-navarro.com>[accessed: 30 January 2014]

The [P1] is to be understood as a mapping of potential strategies of transformation, building an exploratory framework which may inform the subsequent architectural propositions. In this context, the studied works will constitute a potential guide for approaching the existing building in Prora, as well as serve as a key to interpreting its potentials, and later on to choosing the design strategy.
In this context, following potential actions of transformation are to be studied:

>Parasiting
>Infiltrating
>Masking
>Intertwining

Performing the studies in groups of 4 students, 1 chosen work – associated with one of the categories – will be analysed with particular attention to the relationships:
>Between the existing and the new structural system(s)/materials
>Between the existing typology and the new program/strategy of inhabitation
>Between climatic/ambient conditions and inhabitation (dynamics of use) in 12 month time-scale and/or 24 hours time-scale

The above-mentioned relations, as well as the potential cross-relations, will be illustrated and communicated through collages and diagrams in A1 index-sheet. No text (except the title announcing character of the analysed relations) is to be used. No image/drawing (except one representative image) will be used without being previously processed/re-worked – meaning in their original state.
The layout and the character of the index-sheet will depend on the nature of the produced and/or collected material. However, conceived as a laboratory, in which the collective inquiry and production transcends the scope of individual interests and insights, [P1] aims at constructing a collective archive of case studies, which will establish a foundation for further discussion and project development. Thus, the students are asked to adjust their material to the following format:
>A1 sheet (in vertical) folded (zig-zag) in 4 sections
>3 sections will correspond to the studied relations
Maximum 10 words title will be assigned to each analysed relationship.
>1 section will contain as follow:
action(s) which the analysed work is associated with
1 representative image (announcing the source)
title of the work
author(s)
year of construction and transformation
location
climatic zone
names of the students will be placed at the lower left section of the A1 sheet.

Each team should at least involve one newcomer/exchange student, one 2nd year student and one 3rd year student.

All produced/collected material should be available at the presentation.
All used material – quotes, references, images etc.– must announce source according to the provided reference system.
The final catalogue is to be delivered both on paper and as a PDF document uploaded to the shared folder. >>>> Shared (R) ˃ Bachelor ˃ Unit 2+3d_AL ˃ S2014 ˃ Phase I, as well as published on the student’s blog
